This course will explore topics related to the development of sport from the local to global, as well as the uses of sport for political purposes and social impact. The Canadian sport system will be analyzed, including the role of youth clubs, schools, provincial/national programs, and professional franchises in the development of sporting excellence and tribal identities. The role of transnational sport organizations (e.g. FIFA) and oversight agencies (e.g. WADA), as well as the emergence of internationally recognized athletic clubs (e.g. Manchester United) and brands (e.g. Nike), will be considered in the context of sport internationalization, athletic representation, and the commercialization of sport. Debates related to the uses of sport in cultural and political contexts and the use of sport as a tool to influence social change will be critically considered. Cross-listed with KP343.
